The track from the carpark leads down through beech forest and manuka groves to the lakeshore. Listen out for bellbird, tui and kereru (wood pigeon). On the trail along the lake, you’ll pass a historic lime kiln from the 1800s, when the Whakatipu Lime Company quarried limestone from the area. There were once seven kilns, but only one survives. The eucalyptus trees nearby were planted to fuel the kilns. Limestone quarried from Bob's Cove was used to build the Queenstown Courthouse and the Kawarau Bridge. As you continue along the trail through native forest and around the bay you’ll eventually come to a wooden jetty (or dock). It’s a picturesque spot and a great place to grab some photos. Get back to the track and follow the signs to "Picnic Point", and walk for approximately 20 minutes until you reach the top of Bob's Cove Lookout, where you'll have reached what I think is one of the best coastal viewpoints on Lake Wakatipu. The stunning turquoise waters are nothing short of breathtaking. Please note the walk to Picnic Point is short but quite steep.
