RendezvousThe Shell Grotto is also worth a visit, it is an ornate subterranean passageway. Almost all the surface area of the walls and roof is covered in mosaics created entirely of seashells, totalling about 190sq meters of mosaic or 4.6 million shells. It was discovered in 1835, but its age and purpose remain unknown. The Grotto is a Grade I-listed building and is open to the public.

The theatre dates from 1787 and was radically altered in 1874 by Jethro T. Robinson (father-in-law of Frank Matcham, the famous and prolific theatre architect who along with his two protégés are responsible for more than building 200 theatres before 1915).
