The Golden Cross has been serving beer continuously since the 1400s and today is one of the best restaurants in town. Independently owned, hosts Gareth and Teresa make everyone feel welcome. The decor is quirky! So many good things to choose from but their beer-battered fish is a real crowd pleaser. You usually need to book for the evening but lunchtime not so much. (N.B. Closed on Mondays)

Simply the best vegetarian restaurant in town. A bit 'old school' maybe - but everything honest, home cooked and tasty

Not really a street market, but an independent with some really tasty food. Try the Felafel and Hummus Box, great value for £5. There are a few tables at the back or you can takeaway.

If you find the coffee at the main chains too bitter, Peaberry will make a nice change. They also have delicious Portuguese Pasteis de Nata.

Recently opened and fast becoming one of my favourite eateries, the quality of the food is outstanding. I don't know of any other restaurant in town that dares to have souffles on their menu, let alone turns them out regularly, and perfect every time! Currently open Weds, Thurs, Fri, Sat all day and Sunday lunchtime.

One of the ugliest buildings in town (look for the 60s clock tower), but don't let that stop you going inside. As well as a great selection of stalls, there are several great places to eat in the market including the Birds Nest Cafe, a dumpling bar, Barkworths Seafood bar and a tasty Thai restaurant.

Frequently voted the best independent wine store in the UK, Tanners is well worth a visit. The cellars were used in the filming of the 1983 production of Scrooge. Recently they have opened a retail shop fronting onto Wyle Cop, and a lovely courtyard at the back where you can sit and have a glass of wine.
