Food Scene
The owner, Mustafa is a family friend of Irfan's - he grew up just steps from the restaurant. It's a true cave (Irfan can point out where all the animals were kept in the room from before it was renovated!) and the atmosphere is authentic and cozy. Plus, you'll find some of the most delicious meze and other Turkish dishes in town. Highly rated on Trip Advisor for good reason, this is our top choice when we are celebrating a special occasion.

Best view of the entire town of Goreme! They're open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and sometimes we like to just drop by for a Turkish coffee or a cup of cay in the evening to admire the views.

You MUST try the mercimek (lentil soup) at Cafe Safak, it was awarded the coveted "best in town" destinction at the town's annual festival and it's a great deal! For only 7 TL, you can fill up on a bowl of the delicious soup and a basket of bread. PLUS, some of the best coffee in town - one of Fatma's son's brought he espresso machine from Melbourne and I love their flat whites! If you like cooking, you can also inquire about their cooking classes where you get to take home the recipes (including mercimek!)
**The map location for this is wrong, it's not on Muze Cad, but right in town!**

The largest of the many underground cities scattered about Cappadocia, Derinkuyu has a stunning 8 levels and housed tens of thousands of people (and their animals!) for months at a time. There's truly nothing like walking through it and trying to imagine what it would have been like to live there - very cool!!

Love Valley
See why they call it LOVE valley in person... ;)
The valleys surrounding our town are amazing! You can find a variety of hiking trails to explore or join one of Irfan's horseback tours if you want to cover more ground in a unique way - Cappadocia is known as "Land of the Beautiful Horses" after all...

Arts & Culture
The town of Avanos is about 9 km north of Goreme and is built on the Red River, which produces a red clay used for centuries to create amazing ceramic pottery. There are tons of shops where you can see potters working using the traditional wheels and even try your hand at it yourself. I love the clay cooking vessels called guvec and the decorative pottery is also great for souvenirs.

Shopping
There are many places to buy the traditional macrame crafts that women of this part of Turkey traditionally used as embellishment to their headscarves. Today, they've also used the same technique to make beautiful jewelry pieces, which are my favorite souvenirs to take home to girlfriends since they are inexpensive (most 5-10 TL) and take up almost no space in your suitcase. My friends LOVED them and the women that run this shop are so very sweet!

Getting Around
Right in the center of town and less than 5 min walk from our house, the Goreme otogar is convenient for catching both local and long-distance buses throughout Turkey. There's also a taxi stand and car and bike rentals nearby. You'll also find two supermarkets just across from the otogar (BIM and A-101) and a few ATMs.

Drinks & Nightlife
Kocabag is one of the major producers of Cappadocian wine, and probably my favorite. It's easy to find Kocabag at restaurants in Goreme, but sometimes difficult to find bottles to purchase. So I recommend going to the tasting room in person, if possible. Then you can taste and find your favorite! It's also directly across a nice viewpoint over Pigeon Valley looking towards Goreme.
