The Cité Médiévale de Carcassonne is the largest fortress in Europe. Founded during the Gallo-Roman period, the citadel derives its reputation from its 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) long double surrounding walls interspersed by 52 towers. The citadel is the most famous attraction in Carcassonne, and well worth a visit. It has been classified as a World Heritage Site of the UNESCO since 1997. Inside its walls you can also find many good shops and restaurants.
