Ask us for directions to Jack Bridge, an old stone bridge and our favourite local spot for a picnic, and a paddle in summer. There are a few ways to get there, from a short walk small kids can manage to longer walks through the woods and over the hills.

Sightseeing

Make a pilgrimage to the grave of writer Sylvia Plath, buried here because she was married to local poet Ted Hughes. Heptonstall is a quaint cobbled village worth pottering around. The tea shop is a great stop for cake. Plath's grave is in the churchyard across the lane from St Thomas the Apostle Church. This is worth exploring too, it has an atmospheric ruined church from the C13th, sitting alongside a later replacement. There are a few nice walks which take you up to Heptonstall, and a bus from Hebden.

Atmospheric Haworth is well worth a visit for steam trains, cobbled streets, vintage shops and the Bronte Parsonage Museum. Occasionally the whole town gets involved in a vintage weekend, all dressed up 40s or 60s, which are busy but really fun.

Saltaire village is a World Heritage Site, based around a Victorian woollen mill and the workers village. The mill now houses a wonderful David Hockney gallery, heavenly bookshop, nice cafe and art and design shops. There are more nice little shops to browse in the village, along with canal, nice park, and great architecture. There's even a funicular tramway up to Shipley Glen. Got to love a funicular.

Arts & Culture

Absolutely the best place for children, from toddlers up to primary school age. Completely interactive, with lots to explore from a miniature high street where you can pretend to be a mechanic or a banker, to an area exploring sound and one about the body. The under 5s craft room upstairs is fab for the littlest, and all the activities organised by the eureka staff are been brilliant (we've been to loads). Term time or earlier in the day are best to avoid busy times. Its expensive as a one off though - £13 each, but your ticket lasts for a year.

A world class sculpture park. The setting of the Yorkshire hills and lakeside provides a fantastic backdrop for sculptures from the likes of Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and Andy Goldsworthy amongst many more. There are always temporary exhibitions too, and lots of activities. We love walking around, exploring sculptures and climbing trees. Free, but you pay for parking.

Fantastic modern art gallery. The permanent collection of Barbara Hepworth's sculpture is great, I love the section looking at her tools and processes. They get a really good selection of temporary exhibitions and events too, and there are always good activities for kids.
