Steeped in so much history, this is the ideal place to take the family crabbing. Buy a bucket, line and some bait from one of the may shops in Dartmouth, cast away and enjoy some old fashioned fun. This is best around high tides, so check online. The Mayflower left here before stopping at Plymouth and ultimately the new world. With its 16th century fort, it is very pretty and was location for some of the 1970s TV series - 'The Onedin Line'. With it's nearby shops, cafes and Inn, why not grab a drink or bite to eat at Bayards Cove Inn, brunch at Alf Resco or some fish 'n' chips at the nearby RockFish takeaway.

20 mins by car (or a boat trip from Dartmouth) gets you to one of the most attractive villages in Devon. Un-spoilt with fabulous views of the river. Beware, parking is limited in the summer. The village makes fantastic day trip location for the kids - the pontoon makes an ideal crabbing hotspot. Both bay the river, why not try the Ferry Boat Inn (FBI) for great riverside ales and food or The Anchorstone Café.
