Edinburgh is well known for its Fringe festival during August, but The Stand offers a little taste of the festival atmosphere throughout the year. The Stand hosts both local and touring comedians, as well as famous names and new acts. You might even be able to boast that you saw the next big thing before they were famous.

Thanks to the way Edinburgh’s Old Town was built, there is still a warren of secret closes and vaults hidden below street level. The most famous of these has to be the reportedly haunted Mary King’s Close. The Real Mary King’s Close guided tour takes you underground to discover the fascinating history of Edinburgh’s past. I

Admire the grand Victorian architecture as you spend a relaxing afternoon in the steam room, hot chambers and icy pool. Beginning right in the heart of Edinburgh and going all the way to Falkirk, the Union Canal provides the perfect setting for enjoying a range of countryside activities without ever having to leave the city. Walk or cycle along the towpath, have a go at rowing or kayaking, find a spot for fishing, or even hire a barge to cruise along the canal in style. Once you head back towards Edinburgh Quay, savour a well-deserved drink in Akva’s beer garden which overlooks the canal.
