Rental Cars
Do not expect to find any kiosks at the airport, so please reserve a car before arriving. You won't find any big name rental companies on Eleuthera, like Budget or Enterprise. All rentals are done through locals.
You can arrange for pick-up and drop-off at any of Eleuthera's 3 airports with your rental car provider. Depending upon where the rental company is based, there may be an added fee for one airport verses another. Both of our rental properties are pretty centrally located between the North Eleuthera Airport and the Governor's Harbour Airport. It's about a 30 minute drive to either one.

Rent a car, not a golf cart
Golf carts are great for getting around on the small islands of Harbour Island and Spanish Wells, but not feasible to drive around the main island of Eleuthera.
You’ll need a car that’s not too low to the ground. Any type of crossover, Jeep, or small SUV is ideal. Preferably something that’s a little higher in the wheel well. Our driveway and most all of the roads that lead to the beaches here are not paved.

Some helpful items...
Sunblock, bug spray and long-sleeved shirt & pants to protect against mosquitos and no-see-ums at dusk and dawn.
We find water shoes to be ideal for some of the beaches and points of interest here. They're great for the pools at the Queen's Baths, jumping in the Sapphire Hole (to help with the climb out) and even in the Hatchet Bay Caves.

Bring some cash
It’s definitely a good idea to bring cash with you. The closest bank machine is in Governor’s Harbour (about 45 minutes away) or Harbour Island (a boat ride away). Quite a few places on the island accept credit cards now, but there are still some restaurants, gas stations, taxis, and car rentals that only accept cash. If you have Bahamian dollars left at the end of your stay, make sure to exchange them to US dollars before leaving the Bahamas. The airport liquor store or one of the taxi drivers outside should be able to exchange them for you.
