James Fort holds a commanding position directly across the harbour mouth from Charles Fort. Together, these forts guarded the narrow harbour entrance.

The old head of Kinsale 5 miles from the town is well worth a visit to view the 200 year old Signal Tower which has recently been restored and is now open to the public as a Lusitania Museum where you can see artefacts from the wreckage of the Lusitania ship which sank off the south coast. There is a bus local link 253 see timetable above from Kinsale during the summer months.
