Windsor was settled by the British in 1791 making it the third oldest town of British settlement in Australia. It was originally called Green Hills by Governor Lachlan Macquarie but then later he changed it to Windsor after Windsor-on-the-Thames in England. It was the first of the five Macquarie towns. The others are Richmond, Wilberforce, Pitt Town and Castlereagh. Windsor was deemed to have great agricultural promise to feed the starving colony and was later known as the “bread basket”.
Today, Windsor is a beautiful quaint town that is so close to busy city life but has retained its heritage and country lifestyle. There are many restaurants, cafés and bars in Windsor. The shopping is boutique in nature rather than super-chain stores, making it a pleasurable experience.

Wisemans Ferry is named after Solomon Wiseman, a former convict, set up the ferry service in 1827 to transport food and building supplies, making it an important thoroughfare which kicked off the river industry. This route opened the Hunter Valley to settlement. Up to 500 convicts built stone walls, bridges and culverts to construct the road which remain still intact. Visitors today come and walk the convict trail at Devines Hill, Dharug National Park and marvel at the engineering genius of that time.
Today, there are two crossings – Wisemans Ferry and Webbs Creek Ferry that operate every day for free. The township has kept its old world charm and heritage of its time. The Wisemans Cemetery is heritage listed as well as the Wisemans Ferry Inn Grounds and the convict trail on Old Great North Road.
