I highly recommend ordering a pizza. Though, their other foods are ok too. They have an arcade game room. In summer months they have soft-serve ice cream.

Nachos Mexican Restaurant just opened recently (early 2022). We've been there once and we were totally impressed with everything. A clean restaurant, welcoming staff, delicious food and drinks (and large portions). We highly recommend!

Parks & Nature

Mount Rainier is one of the most iconic peaks in North America. Rising 14,410 feet above sea level, it can be seen for miles and often hovers like a sentinel over the cities of Seattle and Tacoma. As the one of the earliest national parks established in the U.S, Mount Rainier National Park offers hundreds of hiking trails and scenic drives. General park info: https://www.nps.gov/mora/index.htm It's a 25 minute drive to Mt. Rainier's Steven’s Canyon entrance. Note: Steven’s Canyon Rd. entrance (via SR 123) is open from approximately May through October or November. Check road status here: https://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/road-status.htm

This is a good place to sled in the national forest. Heading east on Highway 12 take a left on NF-1284. Just up the hill to the right is a trail. On the left you'll find some parking spots. Lots of good little sledding hills on the path right next to the parking area. (Or, if it's not busy you can sled right on the trail).

A five minute drive from the cabin will get you to another national park forest trail system. Note that if you’d rather walk to the trailhead it will take approximately 20-25 minutes. Within these trails you can find two amazing waterfalls. Exit out of the neighborhood (out of High Valley Park 6) and turn right onto Cannon Rd. Drive about .8 miles. Turn left onto Tatoosh Trail Rd. Follow this road until you encounter a closed road sign. Park near the closed road sign and avoid blocking residential driveways. Take the main trail (which appears to start as a dried creekbed). Avoid several side trails. Cross a small creek over a bundle of logs/boards and take the first trail left. Eventually you’ll arrive at the large Tatoosh Trail Falls. The total time to hike to the waterfall is approximately 10 minutes. You can continue up to the top of the waterfall but it’s a bit of a steep climb that might not be appropriate for small kids. The second waterfall is a small hidden gem, and is not as easy to find. If you head back towards the parking area you will likely hear a second waterfall on the right. There’s a handful of other trails that will get you to the second waterfall. It is truly hidden and the trails are not maintained, nor are they well travelled. If you follow your ears you will find it. It’s about a 3-5 minute walk off the main trail. Please do NOT climb up the waterfall as the moss is delicate and shoes can damage the moss (plus it’s slippery). There are many other trails in this area within the thousands of acres of National Forest.

Just a seven minute walk from the cabin brings you to a Gifford Pinchot National Forest trailhead with almost 100 acres of hiking. To get there, turn left out of the cabin driveway. Walk until the road intersects Elkhorn Dr. Turn left onto Elkhorn. Just past Chipmunk Pl you’ll find the trailhead on the right. The trail isn’t labeled, but there is an “END OF COUNTY ROAD” sign at the start of the trailhead. During the spring parts of the trail can be muddy.

One of our favorite day trips (with or without kids) is to drive from Packwood to Mt. Rainier in a big loop. There are lots of good stops and mini hikes to do along the way. It's only about a 2.5 hour drive. But with some stops and small hikes it can easily be a full day trip. At the end of the day we like to have snacks/dinner in Ashford before heading back to Packwood. Note that Skate Creek Rd (NF-52) from Ashford to Packwood is paved, but is bumpy.
