The only palm forest in Europe covers an area of approximately 250,000 square metres. There are different stories of how palm trees came to Crete. One version has it that Arab pirates came here in their ships, ate the dates they had brought with them and threw the stones on the ground. From these dates grew about 6,000 palm trees, of which 4,500 are still growing today. The second version has it that the forest was created in a similar manner by Phoenician sailors who colonised this part of Crete.

Koufonissi is the ancient island of Lefki (“White”), so called because of its white rocks and sand, limestone being the dominant type of rock here. Ancient ruins cover the island and can be dated from the Minoan civilisation and the post-Byzantine era when some of the caves were used as chapels during Christian persecution by the Ottomans. Due to the wealth of archaeology the island has been described as "a little Dilos". Day trips are offered at Makrygialos harbour.
