507 Newcastle StPenn Center, formerly Penn School, was one of the first schools in the country to educate freed slaves. Today, it is one of the foremost institutions dedicated to the preservation of African American history and culture - more specifically the Gullah Culture of the Sea Islands. Interestingly, Penn Center was a retreat place for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s.
