Food Scene

Rustic ambiance and great pub-type food. Very friendly atmosphere. Child friendly (video games in a separate room). Thursday nights are often trivia nights. Friday nights are karaoke. Doesn't get crazy there, though. Owner and staff are wonderful.

OK. Archer, Florida and Mexican food? Well, let me tell you, this place is AWESOME. The food...LOVE IT. I'm a big fan of the Mushroom Quesadilla, but there are other amazing dishes. Great prices. Bring your appetite. Servings are HUGE.

VERY PRICEY...but worth it. If you are celebrating a special occasion or looking for what just might be the best steak in Florida...this is your place. Try the oyster sampler. Ask for a meat presentation. And, if you are a true meat-a-saurus, go for one of those amazing cuts of meat. They even offer black and blue which, after tasting it, is my new answer to "how do you want it cooked." I do not recommend this for children...unless they really enjoy fancy food. It's more of a couples or group place. Nice ambiance.

Just in case you want something fast or for the kids, there is a Subway at the Circle K gas station nearby. Not an eat-in facility but good for a quick sandwich to take with you or bring back to the farm. Next to the Save-A-Lot food store.

Essentials

For your basic needs, this is THE place to go. Unbelievable prices on every day items. Not so keen on the meats (chicken, particularly). Limited fresh vegetables and fruits, but what is there is definitely fresh. :-)

For people who bring their farm animals with them, this is THE go-to place. Hay, shavings, food, etc. If you have a specific brand, call ahead and they will try to stock it for you. They also deliver to the property for a small delivery fee. Visit the store, too. It's adorable with an old-country feel to it. You'll leave a friend.

Only 45 minutes from the farm, Cedar Keys is a really great place to visit. It's a small coastal town that is one of the best kept secrets in the area. Walk around, visit the small stores, dine while watching the sunset over the Gulf (and maybe see dolphins right outside the restaurant). A small beach for children is open to the public. It normally isn't crowded. On the way home, stop at the small seafood place on the way out of town (you can't miss it) for fresh fish, oysters, or shrimp. Delicious.

Visitors to this old Florida homestead can walk back in time to 1930s farm life where Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings lived and worked in the tiny community of Cross Creek. Her cracker style home and farm, where she wrote her Pulitzer prize-winning novel The Yearling and other wonderful works of fiction, has been restored and is preserved as it was when she lived here. The park is open every day and visitors may tour the house with a ranger in period costume from October through July on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 and 11 am and at 1, 2, 3, and 4 pm. Picnic facilities, a boat ramp to Orange Lake and a playground are located in the adjacent county park.

I love history soooo.... In 1854, Thomas Evans Haile, his wife, Esther "Serena" Chesnut Haile, and their four children, arrived in Alachua County, Florida and established a 1,500-acre Sea Island cotton plantation. The home was named Kanapaha, Indian for "small thatched houses." The 6,200 square-foot house was solidly built of heart pine and cypress (siding is cypress), using braced frame construction and mortise and tenon joinery. Completed in 1856, the house stands as a testament to the skill and expertise of the enslaved craftsmen who built it. Check out their website for more information: https://www.hailehomestead.org
