Sightseeing

- Little Venice This is the most picturesque spot located under the famous windmills where you can enjoy your cocktails during the sunset. - Windmills This is the trademark of Mykonos with its spectacular views over Little Venice and Mykonos chora. - Delos island The island of Apollo, the God of Light is declared as the “most sacred of all islands”. One of the few places on earth which hold a special mystical power due to their strong energy fields. It is a spiritual place linked to the energy centers of our planet. Delos is a popular pole of attraction for people interested in historical places, UNESCO World Heritage Sites (Delos was declared as one in 1990), or lands with the power to unleash their spiritual potential. So, we often see tourists and locals visiting the island to meditate, practice Yoga because they feel the energy of Delos accelerates the benefits of whatever spiritual practice they try. Nowhere else in the Globe is there a natural archaeological site of this size and importance. No other island on Earth hosts so many monumental antiquities from the Archaic, the Classical, and the Hellenistic periods, which are the periods of the great Greek art. There is a museum in Delos which accommodates archaeological discoveries from ancient pottery collections, marbles, jewerly and mosaics. Delos is not a museum; Delos is history itself. - Panagia Paraportiani The church of Panagia Paraportiani is situated in the are of Kastro by the sea in Mykonos town(Chora). It is among the most photographed churches in the world. During the Middle Ages in this location was a tall fortified tower being one of the entrances to the Kastro(castle). The whitewashed church consists of five separate churches which are joined. Panagia Tourliani The Monstery of Panagia Tourliani is one of the major Mykonos attractions worth visiting, especially if you love sites of significant religious value. Located 8km from Mykonos town in a region called Ano Mera. Panagia Tourliani counts many centuries from its construction. It owes its existence to the will of two monks of the Panagia Ekatontapyliani monastery of Paros, who wanted to build a church dedicated to the Assumption/Presentation of the Virgin Mary, in 1542. In the Monastery you can see a museum with rare Byzantine icons and holy vestments. In the area of the Monastery is a square which is surrounded with tavernas serving delicious traditional Greek food. - Archaelogical Museum Facing the sea in the old port in Mykonos town(Chora) is the archaeological museum where you can find a unique collection of articrafts discovered in excavations throughout the island and in neighbouring islands of Delos and Rhenia. It includes marble and clay sculptures, vases, jewerly and ceramics, dating back to the 9th century BC. The museum was created in 1902, in order to preserve artifacts discovered in 1898. Its most famous piece, however, is a vase with an image of the Trojan horse dating from the 7th century BC and unearthed in Mykonos in 1961. - Catholic Church The Catholic church of panagia Rodario is located in the area of Little Venice for the needs of local Catholics and tourists. - Gyzi Castle The ruins of Gyzi Castle are a fairly noticeable landmark on the island of Mykonos. The castle is perched on a hill that overlooks the village of Ano Mera. At on time, this castle was designed to keep watch over the village and its inhabitants. Built in the 13th Century by the Gyzi Family that ruled on Mykonos during this period, the castle was built as a fortress against foreign enemies as well as for pirates. The castle was abandoned when the Ottoman Empire took over in the 14th century. For many centuries, pirates used Mykonos as a home base while plundering the surrounding areas. The castle survived the pirates and abandonment, though it fell to ruins. Today visitors love to walk through this area, seeing and imagining what this historical site brings to mind. - MYKONOS CHORA CASTLE(KASTRO) The Kastro is located on a hill behind the town hall and it was the acropolis of Ancient Mykonos. It was built to serve as a fortress to protect from the invasions of pirates. A Byzantine and then Venetian Kastro succeeded it, of which scant remains can still be seen. - Paleokastro Monastery The Paleokastro Monastery (meaning Old Castle) is an 18th century nunnery situated on a hill near the town of Ano Mera. Its architecture is the typical of the Cyclades and the interior is decorated with icons and a magnificent altar. The area where the Monastery of Paleokastro is located is known to be one of the two large settlements during ancient times. - Maritime Musuem The Aegean Maritime Museum was founded in 1985 on the island of Myconos. Its purpose is to collect study and promote Greek maritime history and tradition, in particular the evolution and activities of the merchant ship, mainly in the historic region of the Aegean Sea. The Museum’s collections allow the visitor to travel through time in Greek maritime history, on the seaways of the Aegean from ancient times to our days. Its exhibits include models of ships from the pre-Minoan period to this day, historical shipping documents, rare engravings and maps, ancient artifacts, navigational instruments, equipment and tools, as well as a collection of rare coins depicting nautical themes from the fifth century BC to the fifth century AD. - Folklore museum The Folklore Museum is located in Kastro, a few meters away from the famous Paraportiani. Τhere are six main exhibition halls which house collections of antique furniture, Byzantine icons, Folkloric ceramics, historical commemorative plates, decorative prints and gravures, as well as embroidered and hard-woven fabrics, locks and keys, weights and measures, a lovely collection of model boats, and other historical artefacts. There are also important archives of manuscripts and printed matter, photographs, maps and a library. - House of Lena The house of Lena is a 19th century middle-class Folklore Mykonian residence located next to the Aegean Maritime Musuem and near the Tria Pigadia (“Three Wells”). The inheritors of the owner Lena Skrivanou donated the house to Mykonos Folkore museum. In the living room you can see not only the furniture but also the prints, the embroideries, the mirrors and the decorative plates. Τhe bedrooms are fitted with Viennese furniture. - Agricultural museum The agricultural museum of Mykonos is housed in an old windmill, on a hill overlooking the capital town. It serves the idea of an outdoor museum, which includes as its exhibits the Bonis Windmill and some other facilities such as the threshing floor, the dovecote, the well, the oven, the wine-press, etc. The Windmill, the threshing floor and the oven are the tree rural installations that for centuries have provided the locals with bread, the most significant part of their everyday diet. The intention of the Agricultural Museum is to preserve the autonomous rural farmhouse, typical of what once was such a vital aspect of rural life in Greek islands. Also, at the Agricultural Museum of Mykonos one can see tools and machines from the pre – industrial and early industrial eras, which were used in the past for the production and processing of agricultural products. - Armenisti Lighthouse Armenistis 19 meter Lighthouse was built in 1891 as a tribute to the maritime history of Mykonos island and is fully functional until today. Situated in the north-western part of the island, at Fanari area is 6,5 khms from Mykonos town, the lighthouse overlooks the area between Mykonos and the island of Tinos. Its strategic position offers scenic views of the surrounding areas and is worth visiting. The decision for building the lighthouse was after the sinking of the British steamship Volta in 1887off the north coast of the island. The mechanism used to provide the light was designed by French company Sauter Lemonier and received an award at the international exhibition in Paris at the time. Visitors can see the original lighting maschinery in the courtyard of the Aegean Maritime Museum. - Municipal Library The Municipal library is unique for several reasons. First of all, it is housed in an historical building that was built in the early 1700’s. The mansion was once a residence of the famous Mavrogenous family that played an important role in the modern history of Mykonos. Manto Mavrogenous, for example, was born outside of Greece but her mother was from Mykonos. During the Greek War for Independence, Manto played a role in the fighting and is dubbed, “La Bella Grecca.” She is known for being a female commander during this war. She is immortalized with a statue that can be found in Mykonos Town. As indicated by the mansion, the family had considerable wealth. The library houses an impressive collection of books and other literary works. Ioannis Meletopoulos, an historian from Mykonos who specialized in the island, donated the volumes. There are over 6000 works that are part of this collection and much of what can be found here is so unique, you won’t be able to find it anywhere else. Meletopoulos donated many of these works from his collection and other people also donated them. - Neolithic settlement of Ftelia The discovery of an ancient settlement at Ftelia attests to the existence of a significant culture on the island during the Neolithic period. The settlement dates back to the Late Neolithic period and it was discovered in the middle of Ftelia’s beach. The oldest buildings date from the 5th and 4th millennium BC. Important architectural ruins were discovered for the first time in the Cyclades in this particular settlement (rectangular buildings that were built on rocks with small storage rooms and thick walls). Plenty of charred bean seeds and fragments of ceramic vessels in different shapes were found inside them. Animal bones and arrowheads made of obsidian were discovered, as well, proving that the residents were cattle breeders and hunters. - Artificial Lake of Ano Mera Dam The Artificial Lake of Ano Mera Dam is located on the northeast part of Mykonos Island, close to Fokos Beach. The dam was constructed to solve the island's water supply problem, and today its artificial lake is a beautiful refuge for many migratory birds.
