City/town information

Mykonos, one of the most cosmopolitan destinations in the Mediterranean, is a place of unique character, an island event though small, yet with a large, enchanting spirit that attracts visitors by the thousands. Everyone is captivated by Mykonos’ allure, and once you visit this island, you remain a devoted fan forever. But what makes Mykonos such a unique and attractive holiday destination? The answer is in the magic of the summer; the sea, the sun, the carelessness, combined with the things that make Mykonos stand out; the night life, the style and the glamour. The gem of Mykonos is undeniably the beautiful Chora of Mykonos! The Town of Mykonos, called Chora by the locals, is a typical Cycladic village built amphitheatrically. It has whitewashed cubic houses with wooden coloured doors, windows and balconies, narrow streets forming a labyrinth, beautiful churches, lovely chapels and purple bougainvilleas contrasting with the bright white of the buildings' walls. If you arrive by boat then you will have the opportunity to take the first glimpses to the white washed houses, the windmills and the beauty of one of the most picturesque points in the Aegean Sea! The heart of the city is closed to traffic during most of the day which makes the walk among the labyrinth streets particularly agreeable, especially during the early morning when the city is calmer for most of the people are at the beaches or still sleeping after a long night of clubbing. The main town can be walked all on foot. Note that it is simply not practical to enter the main part of town on scooters/cars because of the narrowness of the lanes. During evening hours the main roads into town are blocked off. Numerous cafes, chic boutiques, souvenir shops and fine jewelry shops are helping the visitor to enjoy its days in the beautiful capital of Mykonos. Worth seeing in Town, or Chora Mykonos, is the church complex of Panagia Paraportiani which has been recognized as a national cultural monument and is a superb representation of Cycladic architecture. It is among the oldest found on the island and it is one of the most representative Cycladic church. It is actually five churches built in different periods and in two levels. The icon is considered miraculous. Those beautiful churches are located on the hill of the old Venetian castle (Kastro). The famous whitewashed windmills, trademark of the island, are standing on a hill overlooking the city and from where one can enjoy a magnificent view over the Little Venice which is one of the most beautiful parts of the capital and is located on a peak of land, like a small peninsula. Another trademark of the island is Petros the pelican, usually located in Little Venice, he is quite the charmer and loves to pose for photographs. Be sure to look for him! This peak of land consists of two-story Venetian houses of extremely bright colours, built very close one to another, with coloured wooden porches and balconies, lining the seafront, almost falling into the sea with the waves coming to break under them; all this scene forms a wonderful and unique image that charms everyone by its incredible beauty and its magical atmosphere. Many trendy cafes and bars are located in Little Venice which becomes a very noisy and lively area during night time. The capital also has an archaeological museum located between the port and the town, exposing various sculptures, vases and figurines coming from the islands of Delos and Rhenia. In the centre of the town one can find a nautical museum and a folklore museum which houses a collection of icons, furniture, and folk musical instruments. A great number of bars and nightclubs can be found in the capital, proving that the fame of Mykonos to be a party island is not just fame, it is a fact. As soon as the sun goes down, the capital's narrow streets fill with a crowd ready to party and dance all night long. Gialos. This is the old port of Mykonos and today is full with restaurants and cafes where also every morning you will find fresh fish and vegetables from local producers. Your steps will take you to another well-known point of Mykonos, the columns on the sea where you can take photos and catch your breath in the most Aegean way. Alleys. You will need more than one step to explore the corners and the shops in the alleys of Mykonos Chora. Do not panic if you are lost; most of the alleys are leading to Gialos or the Mantw square. The beaches of Mykonos have a unique vibe, unlike any other beach you may have seen. The beach bars keep the fun flowing, with never ending music and dancing, refreshing beverages and playful cocktails in open air parties right at the splash of the waves. At the same time you can indulge in any water-related activity that comes to mind: from exhilarating water-sports to scuba diving or even cruises to nearby beaches or even neighboring islands. The nightlife of Mykonos is also unique; from seaside verandas in little Venice to cosmopolitan bars and gourmet restaurants overlooking the iconic windmills, or to extravagant nightclubs and glamorous beach parties, very few places can boast the invigorating energy that that takes over the island of Mykonos in the summer. Of course, fully enjoying the glamorous holiday destination requires proportionally luxurious and extravagant accommodation. You can find such in the Calypso Sunset Luxury Villa and enjoy the truly amazing holiday destination that is Mykonos Island!
