Neighborhoods
about 20 minutes south, Winter Haven is a quaint town with lots of bars and restaurants that have outdoor seating and allow dogs! Some of them even have their own "doggie" menu that charges "bones" lol
I'd highly recommend Harborside as well. Great atmosphere, two outdoor dining patios and you might even get to see some gators from the dock.
They also have my favorite ice cream in the area at a spot called Cabana Boy. They have weekly specials that are out of this world and for sure try the "Dole Whip". Not everyone does it legit, but they do.
There is a very cool lakeside church called the Rock of Winter Haven if you are looking for a place to worship. They have an excellent youth program and are very welcoming.
Tempo 1930 has bottomless mimosas and a superb staff. The owner came out during our first visit and hand fed our puppy bacon!

City/town information
St Pete's has beautiful white sand beaches, great restaurants, and is right near Clearwater and Treasure Island if you are looking for a beach day. Parking is easy if you get out early and there are a number of little "rest areas" along the beach where you can buy drinks, use the bathroom, buy snacks and floaties, rinse off at a shower and relax in the shade. It gets hot out there so there are a number of shaded lounge chairs along the beach that are first come, first serve. There's also a volleyball area and there's usually someone playing a pick up game looking for another player

Traffic out here is usually congested so...
The traffic is slow moving just about everywhere you go because of the large amount of visitors on the road as well as everyone constantly coming and going to/from the theme parks so we recommend giving yourself 15-20 more minutes than the gps recommends. If you are heading out after 5pm however, you can usually get to the parks, Disney Springs, Disney Boardwalk all in about 15 minutes. Driving back is easy too, but from sun up to about 5pm, traffic will be backed up just about everywhere.

Disney World Parks
Disney requires both a ticket AND a park reservation so make sure that once you get your tickets, you also set up a reservation. Otherwise, you may not be able to go on the day you want to. Also, most tickets allow you to hop to another park after 2pm so if you are doing Hollywood studios or EPCOT, they are close enough to each other (Sky Liner) to see both in the same day.

POLK county and Sunday brunch
If you are into your brunch (like we are), there are so many awesome options with exceptional food options and unique dishes, while still being "brunch". You should plan on making reservations about a week in advance because these places are WELL KNOWN and it would be unlikely you'd be able to just walk in and get a table. (Exceptions are if you don't mind dining at the bar AND First Watch; First Watch is an amazing little chain cafe) Most important thing to know outside of that though is Polk County does not serve alcohol until after 12. The is not the case in neighboring Osceola county

Disney restaurants and dining availability
It is best to make a reservation if you have your heart set on a certain restaurant. In some places (like the parks or Disney Springs), your only option will be bar seating if you don't make a reservation. For families, I'd recommend Rainforest Cafe and T-Rex at Disney Springs. For adults, Enzo's hideaway is a little underground Italian eatery/speakeasy and House of Blues has to die for cornbread. If you aren't afraid of taking a chance on bar seating, I'd set my sights on attractions or shopping and then find a spot to eat from there. It is not hard to find a great place to eat at the Springs
