Neighbourhoods

Built in deliberately confusing, winding streets to protect the locals from the raids of pirates (in times past!), now bustling with bars, restaurants and shops for all tastes and budgets, from local crafts to high end fashion. My favourites: Asimina’s meat balls at Maerio, first release movies at the open air cine Manto, cocktails at Little Venice watching the sunset, Greek pottery and the Trojan War jar at the Museum, ouzo and meze at Yialos overlooking the port, mini cheese, spinach and custard pies at the underground bakery near the mills and many more!

This is my favourite virgin beach in Mykonos, one of the few beaches still without umbrellas and with one of the best taverns on the island (expect long queues).

The traditional village square and Cycladic monastery in the centre of the island, host to one of the greatest feasts on 15 August at the festival of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

The MUST visit birthplace of Artemis (goddess of the hunt) and Apollo (god of light, music, and the plague), ‘scientifically’ proven to be the brightest place in the world… Its name literally means ‘revealed’ when the twins’ mother begged for a safe place of delivery persecuted by Zeus’ jealous wife Hera. Visit by boat departing early from the port. Take sun cream, sun hats and plenty of water.

Getting around

Car hire is recommended, as taxis are very sparse. If you need a taxi and there are none to be found, download the app iMove and call a car. Rates fluctuate but are reasonable and the service is very reliable. Please note, iMove cars are not permitted into the airport, so walk to the main road outside. Buses are also good and are air conditioned. There is a water taxi from the new port to Mykonos town and from Ornos to the main south coast beaches. I recommend the hop-on hop-off day pass to explore a variety of beaches from the sea rather than driving to each of them individually.
