Catch the county road south (left) from the house to Hwy 8, then right on Hwy 8 which leads directly to the heart of town at the first stoplight. Pharmacies, food, gas...all right within view of the stop light. Venture a bit farther and the old downtown's secret treasure is Papa's Farm pizza, a local family run pizza parlor with a varied menu and fresh ingredients that MAKE a pizza-- the best! If you are early in the day, check in at Fingerhut Bakery, also a local treasure, with good morning coffee and old fashioned baked goods of all kinds, from cookies to cakes.

Based in a small rural farming community, this little town is north of Koontz lake a few miles and has stores for essentials and some small parks. There are two good places to eat in town, the Chinese restaurant on the main street and the Corner Cafe in the same block. The Chinese is as good as you will find in the area, always hot and freshly made.

The broadest selection is north of Notre Dame and South Bend up into Niles. Four large malls offer hundreds of dealer booths daily throughout the year except on some Holidays. More shops and malls abound, in LaPorte, Plymouth, Bourbon, Culver and other small towns within easy driving distances. For the more adventurous, Indiana in rich in antiques and opportunities for trips in half or full day adventures.

Amish Country
This lovely day trip places you anywhere from Nappanee IN to Shipshewana IN, in the midst of a large Amish community. Weekly antique auctions, regular acres of flea market fun, and of course, the country amenities of Amish settlements, with an abundance of fresh bakery goods, canned items, fresh foods, & delicious family cooking in a variety of settings. Don't miss the buggies as they clop by & the clean friendly community surrounding you as you make this excursion. Well worth the trip & something for everyone. Seasonal fields exhibit old farming techniques.

A heads up...time zone border!
This area of Indiana sits near the time zone divide that is notorious in northcentral Indiana. When you leave the driveway that going west, its generally in CST. Going east is almost always EST. If you do not lock your technology settings, they can toggle back & forth trying to figure out which zone (and you may wake up in the alarm you set off by an hour.) Counties vary on how they handle this, so be sure and double check what time it is at your destination.

Because the cottage location is central for this rural part of Indiana, there are a variety of fireworks displays yearly & periodically nearby, in addition to the usual 4th of July shows:
*Culver Summer Fest has a show every year in July over lake Maxinkuckee.
*Plymouth hosts spectacular fireworks display on Sunday night of the Blueberry Festival over Labor Day weekend.
*LaPorte IN sometimes hosts a Fireworks guild meet that spans a week when it comes to town. Grande Finale is set to music and quite a show!
*Also, ask about a best-kept-secret show held near the 4th of July!
