A 12,000-acre preserve that straddles the headwaters of the Everglades ecosystem. Bordered by cypress-ringed Lake Russell, with one of the area’s last undeveloped lakefronts, the preserve is home to more than 1,000 species of plants and animals. Good educational facility with 7 miles of trails. Watch for turkeys and sandhill cranes on the drive in. On the trail, expect raptors, bobwhites, wrens, warblers, blue birds, and sparrows. Scan lake for woodcocks, waders, snipe, king rails, and ducks.

Don’t let the Disney name confuse you, this is strictly a nature preserve. There is no nature center, just walking trails. Remote setting compared to other nature preserves. Keep an eye out for wildlife--gator sightings are common.
