C18th feminist Mary Wollstonecraft ('Vindication of the Rights of Women') is buried here. Author Thomas Hardy was a trainee architect before he turned to writing. He re-modelled this churchyard to make way for the new railways of the steam age. He stacked the old gravestones in 'Hardy's Circle'. My hero Edward Carpenter (friend of Walt Whitman) wrote here.

A young Thomas Hardy even worked here during excavations for the new railway and left his name to a tree surrounded by the gravestones he helped move.
