Kirufebon is not a Kyoto institution per se, but for me at least it has the best cakes in all of Kyoto. The line to sit in their cafe can be about two hours. I always get it takeaway and it's usually the cake store of choice when it's someone's birthday. It is located on Kiyamachi, next to the canal on the west side, just one short block north of Sanjo.
Tart shop. Open from 11am to 8:00pm. Each tarts are very sophisticated and delicious. 8min by walk.
