That of the “Rebel General”, hanging in the Dining Room, stirs curiosity in particular. Having served in the British Army, Richard Montgomery (1736–1775) later emigrated to America and, sympathising with the Colonialists, fought for their cause in the American Revolutionary War. A celebrated hero, he campaigned in Canada but was killed during an attack on Quebec.

Beaulieu House was built by Sir Henry Tichbourne then Marshall of the Army in Ireland and Governor General of Drogheda at the time of the restoration of Charles II about 1660
