The Gatlinburg Trail is one of the only two trails in the smokies which dogs and bicycles are permitted. This trail runs for 2 miles along the Little Pigeon River. It is an easy walk, wooded and along the river with plenty of spots to set up for a picnic and several old foundations and chimneys of homesites for exploring .
It's a great for trail running or walking for delicate knees. Makes for a 3.5 mile loop if you go all the way to the sign. You're running or walking the entire time with the sound of river. Positive energy everywhere.
Easily accessible and suitable for everyone. Nice meandering walk along the river, just inside the National Park boundary.
The Gatlinburg Trail is the only trail on the TN side of the Smokies on which visitors can walk dogs. The trail travels 1.9 miles one-way from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to the outskirts of the city of Gatlinburg, TN. It is relatively flat and runs through the forest along side the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River. The trail offers beautiful views of the river, which at one point is crossed by a pedestrian foot bridge. Foundations and chimneys of several old homesites are visible along the trail.
