The Wallace collection which is totally free boasts an incredibly collection of Mediaeval armour, muskets and swords, as well as many beautiful painting and sculptures
A hidden gem which is not as popular as the other Art galleries, but worth a visit if have extra time.
Founded by the illegitimate son of the 4th Marquess of Hertford, who, on his death, left his mansion and collection to the nation, on the proviso that nothing was ever sold or lent out for an exhibition, so you can always bank on turning up and finding the Titian, Rembrandt and Velazquez paintings in situ. It’s also very strong on Sevres china, French furniture and armour and - this is very much an acquired taste - wax sculptures. The location is a winner too, being central, set back from Oxford Street and close to Selfridges. A delightful cafe draws in locals from tony Marylebone.
