The Academy of Fine Arts is a public art school and one of Europe's oldest art academies, established 1692. The new Akademie am Schillerplatz was designed by Theophil Hansen and built 1871-77.

The Vienna Secession was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists who had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists. The Secession building could be considered as an icon.
