About 1 hour (give or take with traffic) south via I-45 is Houston's beach life. Galveston, TX is home to the Gulf of Mexico, where you can park on the Galveston Strip and enjoy the beach. Galveston is also home to many unique spots such as the Kemah Boardwalk, Moody Gardens, and Pleasure Pier.
You will see a lot of people in golf carts and walking around. Especially on the seawall and the strand. Most places in Galveston are very safe... especially the closer to the action you get. Galveston is in a revitalizing stage. You'll see a lot of renovations, new builds and the charm of the older homes when you enter the island.
Only 45 min away you will be at the beach. Enjoy walking along the seawall, check out Galveston Downtown with strand main street full of small local souvenir shops.
