extinct cinder cone volcano that rises above a 27 sq mile lava field. about a 1 hour drive north east. take lots of water.
When I’ve got plenty of time on my hands, I take this drive out to Amboy and the Mojave National Preserve (another spot where you do get Joshua Trees...besides in JTNP), and the crater is a lovely little spot to climb. It’s quite near the iconic Roy’s Motel signpost that’s often used to symbolize Route 66...so go for the postcard pictures!
The landscape is amazing! As you drive up you'll start to see lava rock peppering the desert. The lizards you'll see out there are definitely supersized! During the summer go very early in the morning. Bring lots of water! Also fill up on gas in 29 plams. Roys is not always open and when it is its about $6/gallon. No shops or places to eat there.
