These ruins are smack dab in the middle of a protected jungle wilderness that is home to monkeys, toucans and macaws (just to name a few of the creatures you might spot!). As you walk amongst ruins that emerge from grassy mounds and are surrounded by trees and vines, you'll feel like you've been cast in a remake of Indiana Jones. It's utterly magical.
In my opinion, the trilogy of Guatemala is Antigua+Tikal+volcanos (we should add the indigenous / mayan culture as the fourth and very important pillar). In tikal you will learn and feel the way the mayan used to live. You can go by shuttle or by airplane (300 usd).
At only 1 hour from Flores lays Tikal - an impressive Maya City with many temples and buildings in a beautiful park surrounded by pristine jungle. Take the sunrise or sunset tour for an unforgettable experience.
