The obelisk memorial to John Whitton was financed by a private individual in Springwood. John Whitton, not fully celebrated in his lifetime, made a significant contribution in opening up the mountains and beyond to the railways, thus transforming NSW. Near the Obelisk is the ruins of a gatekeeper's cottage. The gatekeepers ensured gates were shut to carriages and foot traffic when a train was approaching. Many were run by women. There were about 12 up and down the mountain and several well-preserved ones remain to this day. It's a short walk to the Knapsack viaduct, also designed by John Whitton as part of the rail network but subsequently used for motorcars until the 1950s.
