As mentioned on the Demenses walk this can also be reached by car. A 10 minute drive from town and a car park on site however the walk is much more rewarding on a nice day. The charming ruins of a small monastery of Premonstratensian 'white canons', picturesquely set above a bend in the River Tees near Barnard Castle. Remains include much of the 13th century church and a range of living quarters, with traces of their ingenious toilet drainage system.

Lovely circular walk by the River Tees, through the woods and up to the Abbey. Takes about 30 mins up to Abbey and 30mins back into town.
Medieval monastic communities probably did not have much free time to enjoy picnics but the legacy they left behind in terms of beautiful abbeys and churches beckon the modern visitor. In the 13th century the Premonstratensian Canons, or “white Canons”, gave Teesdale one of its enduring images when they built their precious Eggleston Abbey.
