Søborg Castle can be dated back to the 12th century, when Archbishop Eskild built the first castle, a closed fortress with a ring wall and moat. In the Middle Ages, the castle was one of Denmark's largest and best fortified castles and has occasionally also been used as a prison. Several kings have at times stayed at the castle and Valdemar Atterdag's daughter Margrethe was born at Søborg Castle. The castle was located by Søborg Lake, which was drained in 1872-96 by digging a canal that empties into Gilleleje.
