Walk from the bach up to this amazing look out over Mercury Bay. Head down to lonely bay which is sign posted on the walk ... a stunning white beach.
Catch the ferry over from Whitianga, walk to the far end of Flaxmill Bay and up the track to Shakespeare Cliff to the lookout where you will see a beautiful view! Then down the track to Lonely Bay for a swim! Stop in at Eggcentric cafe on the way back for a coffee and cake!
On the 10th November 1769 Captain Cook took the furthest longitude reading south, when Planet Mercury lined up with the Sun and named the Bay .. “Mercury Bay” He named “Shakespeare’s Cliff” as it looks like a poet speaking poetry, welcoming visitors into the bay. You can see Shakespeare’s profile from midway along “Cooks Beach” From the Lookout, there are beautiful views over looking Mercury Bay, Cooks Beach & Lonely Bay.
