Built in 1775, by the Margrave Charles III William of Baden-Durlach, the city of Karlsruhe has since grown around it.
The castle that has started it all. Originally, Karlsruhe was nothing but a forest until Karl III. Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach decided that he wanted to live in a bigger castle. And since having a castle without a people to rule is rather boring, he introduced tax exemptions to make the surrounding area interesting for people to settle down. Currently the castle is housing the "Badisches Landesmuseum" exhibiting everything related to the history of the region. You can climb up to the tower, from where you will have a great view over the city. Free admission on each Friday past 2pm.
