Drive to Fiddleford Manor (SATNAV will take you there). Park in their car park. You have options. We walk out of the car park and turn left and following the road round for a few hundred yards and then there is a track on your left that cuts through two fields until you come to a gravel track. You are now on the Dorset Trailway which is the old railway line. Go left on to this track and follow it over the bridge that crosses over the River Stour. Just as you come off the bridge on the other side, there is a steep slope down on your left hand side (a sort of hairpin). Go down the slope and take the gate into the field on your RHS. You are then walking along the banks of the river. From there you can follow the river for quite a while through meadows and eventually come to Sturminster Newton where you can get coffee/lunch etc. (nice butchers in the middle of town). You could then come back along the trailway (ie not through the meadows), or you can come back the way you went and when you get to Fiddleford Manor you can cross a couple of bridges over the river (really pretty) and the fish ladder and take the short cut back to the car.

OK this isn't a beach, but all locals know that mill ponds are better than any swimming pool. Combine a refreshing dip with a look at the lifestyle of the Sheriff of Somerset and Dorset 600 years ago.
