This traditional British restaurant was a favourite with Charles Dickens and Arthur Conan Doyle. Later, director Alfred Hitchcock became a fan and used it in a sequence in his 1936 film Sabotage. The meal in the film happens in the upstairs ladies’ dining room, which was actually carefully re-created in the studio for the shoot. If you’re in the mood for splashing out, try one of Hitchcock’s favourite dishes, a roast saddle of lamb or a whole Dover sole. Pop upstairs to the Knight’s Bar for a cocktail. The walls are adorned with photographs of film stars and directors from the 1920s who used to frequent the bar and restaurant.
