Dating from the mid first century, it's the town's oldest gate. Named after Hercules, the town patron, it's decorated with a relief showing Hercules' head and club.
The Gate of Hercules are the most interesting and oldest in its historical context, because of the inscription of the two duumviri (Calpurnius and Cassius) sent from Rome to lead the people and build a colony. Lack of decorations on this simple arch, which does not set apart from the wall itself, tells us about the archaic nature of this entrance in the town.

It stands between two, most probably medieval towers. At the top of the damaged arch, although hardly recognizable, is a carving of the head of Hercules and his club.
