You seriously can’t get a better view of the Bay than from this area. The stairs kick your butt, but every time you make it up to the top and turn around and see the Bay and Palace of the Fine Arts and some of the Presidio, it’s a great reward and pumps you up to go for another round. Do one set of stairs and then at the top do three sets of 15 push-ups. Then walk back down the stairs. Sprint back up. Do some air squats. Do planks. I’d say about four or five rounds of stairs with three sets of 10 to 15 exercises in between. It should take about an hour.

There's a reason these steps are a favorite for boot campers and hikers alike. They offer a strenuous workout between the Presidio and Pacific Heights, with incredible views of the bay.
The Lyon Street steps, which connect Cow Hollow to Pacific Heights, are maybe too perfect. If they weren't so wide and sunny and privately landscaped, and if they didn't go from steep to gradual to steep again, maybe the personal trainers and classes wouldn't have commandeered them. You can avoid the trainers by going midday, but if you want to walk the steps at a leisurely pace, you'd better hug tight to the center-rail against the steady flow of huffing runners doing lap after lap, constantly passing on the right.
