The National Archaeological Museum of Metaponto, through a qualified selection of recently acquired finds, offers an archaeological picture of the Metapontine territory from Prehistory to the Late Antique period. The main sections illustrate: - the initial forms of population by the Enotri-Choni during the Middle Bronze Age and the Iron Age; - the arrival of the Greeks from the Achaia (Peloponnese region) during the 7th century B.C.; - the formation of the colony with the occupation of the territory and the development of the city; - the transformations of the Italic centers of the hinterland between the 6th and 4th centuries B.C.

Metaponto was a flourishing city founded by Greek colons: many important traces of its history are preserved at in the National Archaeological Museum as well as in the Archaeological Park.
