UNESCO World Heritage Site. A great shrine with lovely gardens. Always cool and peaceful even in summer time.
15 May. Aoi Festival. At 10:30, the procession leaves Kyoto Imperial Palace, stops by at Shimogamo-jinja Shrine and finally arrives at Kamigamo-jinja Shrine around 15:30. Upon arrival of the procession, dance performances and horse events take place.
Shimogamo-jinja, also known as Kamomioya-jinja, is the family shrine of the Kamo clan, who inhabited this area before the transfer of the capital to Kyoto.
It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
