Established in 1960, this is the oldest bookstore specializing in books by and about black people in the country. The Oakland spot opened in 1976. It’s a center for black history and culture, and has played its own role too; the Black Panthers would meet there and hold lectures, and so have many writers, including Amiri Baraka and Ishmael Reed. Check their website for readings and other author events.
