Sitting within spacious grounds, Tolquhon has been described as one of the most beautiful castles in Scotland. Sir William Forbes, who commissioned it in 1584, intended it to be an impressive residence, though he incorporated plenty of gunloops to deter any hostile visitors. This is a great building to explore, including a secret compartment above the laird’s quarters where he hid his valuables.

An interesting wee castle to visit and explore - off the beaten track and well worth a visit
See for yourself why this noble residence is said to be one of Grampian’s most picturesque castles. Among the lavish details are fine carvings of its chief builder Sir William Forbes and his wife. Roughly 7 miles from Ellon.
Spectacular castle, beautifully designed. Couldn't hold off during a siege, you would think, but a brilliant example of Early Modern Scottish architecture.
