Even with no artifacts, the Museum of the Havana City would be a tour de force, courtesy of the opulent palace in which it resides. Filling the whole west side of Plaza de Armas, the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales dates from the 1770s and is a textbook example of Cuban baroque architecture, hewn out of rock from the nearby San Lázaro quarries. A museum has resided here since 1968.

Collection dedicated to the history of Cuba. Located in the former Palace of the General Captains and City Hall of Havana since 1791. It is one of the best examples of baroque architecture on the island and was the official residence of the Spanish general captains. Currently, and since 1968, it houses the City Museum. The visit shows the ambience of an era through art and decorative objects.

Considered the most important example of baroque architecture in the city, this grand building was built in 1792. It served as Spanish colonial government headquarters until 1898 and housed 65 Capitanes Generales, after which it served as the center of U.S. military administration (1898-1902), then as the Cuban president’s resident, and finally (1920-67) as the City Hall. It is today the Museo de la Ciudad telling the tale of the city’s history. In addition to the private quarters of the captains general and their families, the museum includes historical exhibitions and displays of old horse-drawn carriages, uniforms and artillery pieces, and funerary and religious art.
