Further afield in the village of Selborne, Hampshire, take time to visit to the garden of (and museum dedicated to) the 18th-century curate of Selborne, Gilbert White, a pioneering gardener, scientist and natural history hero. You could also include an eight-mile walk through the local woods and along the bridle paths he loved.
Rare opportunity to see where the Natural History of Selborne was written by Gilbert White.
A fascinating house to visit. Gilbert White was a naturalist of great note, and his family were friends with the Oates family so there are many photographs and artifacts from the ill fated expedition during which Oates lost his life. An excellent restaurant and pretty gardens completes a really interesting and fun day.
