Sidney on the Sea is a lovely little town a half hours drive from Victoria. Take this ferry (from downtown) to Sidney Spit – a beautiful little island with white sandy beaches.
(Operates seasonally.) Pack a picnic (order ahead at the Roost for amazing sandwiches) and take the small passenger ferry from Sidney wharf to Sidney spit for a day of beach fun, hiking or just relaxing. Kayakers skip the ferry - it's a 45 minute paddle from your front door! Great camping too.
Sidney Spit, at the north end of Sidney Island, is five kilometres (by sea) from Sidney on Vancouver Island. The spit is a sandy, narrow strip of land that stretches into the sea—a beautiful spot to sunbathe or walk along thousands of metres of beach. Located on the edge of the Pacific flyway, Sidney Spit’s tidal flats and salt marshes are often overflowing with shorebirds during the bird migrations of spring and fall.

Got a few hours free to spend on the beach. Head on the little island ferry to Sidney Island and Sidney Spit. In the Summer there's an ice cream vendor and occasionally a hot dog stand but it's best to pack drinks and food. It's one of the favourite spots for the local dolphins to appear but there's no guarantee of that. Ferry times are on the board on the Pier next to the Pier Bistro. Plan to be there at least 2 hours. 3.5km or a 7 minute drive away.
