This is the unit of the National Park Service that preserves and tell the story of cattle ranching. Its the real deal - from the land to building and contents. And it is free!!!
This one is a little too far afield for a day trip from the Flathead (although, in Montana we just like to drive, so it's certainly possible), but I am throwing it in here in case you're driving to or from southwest or central or eastern Montana along I-90. Like the Bison Range, there is nothing quite like this anywhere else in America. A still working cattle ranch dating to the early 1800s. A rich and fascinating history is detailed in the exhibits here, and it's a great place to stretch your legs while driving through another beautiful ranching valley in Montana. Teddy Roosevelt was a friend of one of the original ranchers, and Norman Maclean fished the Clark Fork river that runs through.
